The heritage of Argyll and the Isles is complex, diverse and all around us.
It can be hard to grasp just what we have in our local area, let alone across the whole of our county and our myriad islands.
The Argyll & Bute Museums & Heritage Forum interactive heritage map is a first step towards beginning to share the immensity of what we have to learn about.
This map may load slowly at first, especially on mobile, Please BE PATIENT, Give it Time : There are very nearly 26,000 separate heritage points on it, but once it has loaded you can zoom in to your area of interest with the curser and plus/minus buttons top left. On a touch screen you can also move around with finger touch.
Hover over the legend (the 3 stacked lines) in the top right of the screen to explore the layers – you can change the categories of sites you can see by selecting / deselecting as you wish. The Canmore points will link you directly to their database and links open up in a separate window to see more detail.
You can also change the background maps between modern day and historic maps from the NLS archive.

We have started to create individual layers for Castles : Archives : Museums : Graveyards : Clans to explore how we can develop more interesting ways for people to find what they are looking for. These are not comprehensive yet, nor do they have details for each location. If you can assist us to curate the content for these points, that would be so helpful.
Members can have their own details if they want to be included once the website update has been completed where we collect their information.
We hope you enjoy using it, we understand its limitations, and would be grateful for your feedback.
If you find sites that are not on there, let us know too, AND report to Canmore. There is facility with Canmore to add images, information etc using their MyCanmore services.
Over coming years we aim to develop this facility to be more accessible and even more useful.
